A team that follows your workload

Workloads in technology are rarely steady. A release approaches and everything needs doing at once. A quiet spell follows. A new initiative starts. A budget is reviewed. A team sized for the busiest week wastes money for the rest of the year, and a team sized for the quietest week burns out when things get busy.

Flexible team size is our answer. You begin with the number of people you need now, and you adjust as the picture changes.

Starting small

We usually suggest starting with one or two people on a well-defined piece of work. It gives both sides a chance to see how the arrangement feels: how well the person fits, how communication flows, how quickly they become useful. It also gives you a low-risk way to test whether dedicated teams suit your organisation at all.

Growing sensibly

When the work justifies it, we add people. We prefer to add them in a considered way, one at a time where possible, so that each newcomer can be properly welcomed and the team does not have to absorb several changes together. If you know a busy period is coming, tell us early. The earlier we know, the better the match we can make.

Scaling down without drama

Reductions should be as considerate as additions. If your workload falls, we agree a sensible notice period, plan the hand-over of anything in progress and make sure knowledge is written down before someone leaves your team. Nothing should be left half explained.

Planning together

Every so often, we review the size and shape of your team together. We look at what is coming over the next few months, where the load is heaviest and whether the mix of skills still suits the work. It takes a short conversation, and it often prevents a scramble.

Being honest about limits

We keep our own capacity carefully planned. If you ask for more people than we can properly support in the time you want, we will tell you so, and suggest a staged approach instead. A promise we cannot keep helps nobody.
